Asda is set to go cashless at nearly 100 of its petrol stations across the UK.

This means these stations will no longer have staffed tills, and you’ll need to pay for your fuel using the pay-at-pump machines.

You just pop your card in, fill up your car, and the payment is done automatically.

Why are they doing this?

Asda has said that 90% of their forecourt transactions are made by card, and people use less cash.

It may well be about speed and convenience, too.

Using a card or contactless payment is quicker than cash, and it will reduce the queue and wait times.

No staff are losing their jobs and will be moved into work in the main store. This only impacts petrol stations that are right next to supermarkets, and not any standalone forecourts.

The changeover should be done by the summer of 2024.

Pre-authorisation – hold of £99

It’s important to remember that when you use these machines, you might see a pre-authorisation fee on your account.

When you use a pay-at-pump machine, you must insert your card before you fill up.

The machine puts a temporary “hold” of £99 for fuel at Asda to make sure you have the funds to cover the cost of what you put into your tank. This was introduced in 2021.

If you have less than this in your bank, you will have a part-authorisation, which will be lower.

Whether you fill up with £5, £50 or £99, the money will be held aside from your bank account.

After you’ve filled up, the actual cost of the petrol you’ve taken will be calculated.

Only this amount will be taken from your account once the transaction has been completed.

The difference will be returned shortly after and won’t make you go into your overdraft.

It is usually quite quick – Asda says it should be done immediately – but it can sometimes take a few days, depending on your bank.

This is the same process across other pay-at-pump machines in other fuel stations.

What happens if you don’t have a card to pay?

With pay-at-pump, you must provide your card details before the fuel pump is released.

So, you simply won’t be able to fill up your tank.

You will either need to leave and get a card, add your card to your phone’s contactless, or use another petrol station. (See how to find the cheapest petrol near you.)

If you fill up your car at a “normal” pump and realise you have no money, you should let the customer service team know immediately.

You can ask for a “No Means to Pay” form, which usually gives you 48 hours to make the payment.

Otherwise, licence plates are recorded, and the store will get the police involved for theft.
